about

February at Warm Days HQ is always Dilla month, and this year we’ve made a record to commemorate it.

Khanya, the Zulu word for shine, or light, is a nod in name of course to the Common and Dilla anthem, while musically the track channels the vibes of the masterpiece that was Fantastic Vol II, with hints of both Jealousy and Untitled (Fantastic), reimagined as a deep house tribute to the late great one, “the best that ever did”, James Yancey aka J Dilla.

With lyrics co-written by Alma Horton, Kabomo and QB, the intro and outro cadencially recalls Slum Village, intoning that “we can’t forget your legacy”, before Alma’s verse mythologizes Dilla’s affective and inspirational powers. Kabomo, singing almost entirely in Zulu, continues the theme, with an african astrology lesson on Dilla’s rightful place amongst the stars that sing his name.

Deep, tech-plus-jazz-infused, Detroit-leaning, humble and most respectful house.
